Philosophy & Ideas
The inspiration for the Prama Foundation comes from the works and teachings of the spiritual master and social activist P.R. Sarkar, who introduced to the world the philosophy of Neo-humanism as well as founding a progressive spiritual and social global organization (Ananda Marga – meaning “the path of bliss”).
Ananda Marga offers instruction in individual self-development at all levels- physical, mental and spiritual, based on a natural and aware way of living through the practices of meditaiton (for introspection), yoga (for harmony and balance) and nutritional education (for a balanced health), all on a non-commercial basis.
Neo-humanism is a universal ecological philosophy, drawing upon ancient Eastern knowledge and awareness on the levels of consciousness.
Sarkar argued that one of the most important factors in the development of any society is a proper social outlook. Love is the answer. Extending the inherent love of human beings to all living beings, people, animals and plant life and not living beings will prove paramount to the shift in today’s society from a mechanistic and consumerist worldview to one based on universal and collective harmony.
We believe that:
- Every human being has the right to the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. The resources of this earth should be utilized in a just and responsible manner to meet those needs.
- Every human being, regardless of social, political or economic identity is a dignified member of the human family and should be treated with respect and compassion.
- It is only by showing respect for women and ensuring their integration and active participation in the development process that harmonious growth in the family, community, and society can be achieved.
- Whether responding to a disaster or developing long-term projects, our programs are community based and work to empower the people we work with.
